Refugees in their own town

Town life has condensed itself to fit in the tent park. The red cross tents are bearable at night, when the temperature drops somewhat, but even on the rainy day we visited it was to hot dark in the tents to use them during the day. So life was conducted entirely outdoors and, rainy days, under tarps

The camp was filled with people sitting in makeshift tea houses, drinking tea, smoking. We arrived at lunchtime, so many women were cooking outside over fires or oil burners. People mostly made their own food, but they still gathered to eat it, often in large groups.

The main “street” in the tent town.

Or rainy days, washing and drying laundry, eating, bathing, and cooking all happen together under tarps set up around and across tents. The blue pipes on the right are new, set up by the government.
