Dear Lydia,

Me and my father really like these pictures. I am so sorry there was an earthquake. Did many people fall down? I bet many people did fall down. I wish you have a very good time coming home. When are you going to leave China? Love, Elijah Baraw

Oh Lydia I've read all this whole latest post and tears are streaming down my face. I fear we Americans, I, in comparison to these women, men and children, would act so entitled. Their joy in the single understanding: they are alive is so moving. I am so so glad you are there - able to record what you can by description and such revealing photos - for us and for them.

lydia,
this post is the best pics of the earthquake zone I have seen on internet. I like how you focus on people, individuals, telling their story. Can you get more details. the elderly women in the hospital sitting waiting for service. I wonder what she thinks. Has she experienced a public trauma like this before. How do people feel about the help they are getting. How about the spontaneous responsible citizen, is it apparent? Is it effective. JW

Hey, just commenting on this entry to say that this blog is way cool and I'm jealous that you're off seeing the world and doing exciting things. Sorry I didn't write sooner- I kept meaning to, but then it was all papers-school-packing-moving-graduation until I went home to Virginia for a week and collapsed sick in bed.

Now I'm in Brooklyn, permanently, which is weird. Our apartment has sort of moved out of the "squalor" phase into the "clearly unfinished" phase of unpacking. But at least everything is here now.

I hope everything is okay where you are. I'll cut the comment off now before it reaches email-length proportions. Keep posting, so I can live vicariously!

great picture and glad you're back up posting. How long are you in China? Will a package sent now get there in time? Big questions of the universe.
I think it's beautiful... not at all useless. Speaking of which, we should talk about thesis stuff. You probably need to email ann ducille and declare your intention to do one--explain you didn't have acess to official delcaration form etc. [not sure how that works] but that you are eligible and determined to do a thesis. I think at this point declaring intent is all you need to do. but let's talk about what you are thinking of doing and maybe i can help locate an advisor.

I may have a single freshman class for COL in the fall. No word from Bard high school, so no real job.

i can't commit to advising at this point, so we should presume we need to find somebody else.

keep up the cool blog... and keep up the paper art!

I don't know what to say by way of comment - because it would be like those people on "Antiques road show" who always say:"Wow". But this chapter of your ongoing blog was very moving and thought provoking. Even if I don't comment on each new chapter (or whatever you call it) - it doesn't mean I am not avidly reading and am not completely engaged.

Lydia,
your "on the ground" observations are invaluable. When Elizabeth and I visited China in '84 the human energy was palpable. At that point it was unpredictable how China was going to explode but we felt the explosion of human effort on the cusp. Its now amasing to me to hear the media opeing up, to hear an entire country pulling together around a tragedy "everyone donating, employers giving their employees 2 weeks off" to help. It is absolutely awesome to see China emerge from centuries of falling behind developed countries. Awesome and wonderful. Move over world. Here come the Chinese.

Dear Lydia,

We love your new blog, especially this picture of water painting. Cassie made her own water painting with her paw prints just after we saw this! I have been making a big bag of presents for you, but how do I get it to China?

Dad's note, he doesn't know about the earthquake yet and hasn't seen those images. That will take some "Framing" I have yet to devise.

btw your reporting on the schools is very interesting. and better than most of what I hear on the radio.... cb

When not in use by a Trogan, this spool contains wire used for public street utilities. I sparks me to think of the contrast in methods of use - America vs. China. In America there would two crews of 4 people and one truck for each pair and two cops directing traffic. No one would actually touch the spool as multimillion $ machinery would move it around while most of the union crew watched. All this with a permit secured well in advance. The Chinese way is more like, one of these is needed on the other side of town so start pushing, maybe they'd get there by dark, likely not. They'd take the most direct route even if it was a highway, and they would not stop pushing, except to stop for noodles, until they got there. No permit, no cops, no machines more complicated than a pry bar. The spool in China would eventually become a house or playground after 1000 uses and in America we'd classify it as hazardous waste after 40 uses. Count results and its likely the Chinese crew would lay a 1000 miles of cable for every 100 laid by Americans. China - a frontier of modern life.

Ok, so now I get it - our comments to you are specific to each posting.
Get someone to take a picture of you riding along the streets of Bejiing on your bike.
